Types
Aluminum bronze is not just a single alloy, but also a group of alloys that share the same basic copper and aluminum composition. Each of the aluminum bronze alloys has at least one additional component that changes its properties slightly. Adding nickel forms a number of aluminum bronze alloys that suit specifications set forth by the Copper Development Association, including alpha nickel-aluminum and propeller bronze. Other alloys in this family may contain iron, silicon and manganese.
Properties
Aluminum bronzes are strong and resist corrosion and oxidation. Alloys with silicon are fair to work with for certain types of welding, but excellent for heat formation. Also rated as excellent are alloys without silicon, which may be easier to weld. Cold forming is not recommended for these alloys. Melting temperatures vary by alloy, but are generally around 1,800 degrees F.
Applications
Due to the corrosion-resistant properties of aluminum bronze alloys, a variety of industrial applications use them, including in salt water, pickling processes and mildly acidic environments. The warm golden color also makes aluminum bronze desirable for jewelry and sculpture use.
Fun Facts
Aluminum bronze does not spark when struck, as other metals do, which makes it useful in applications where flammability is an issue. For this reason, combustion engines often have aluminum bronze parts. Bronze alloys of all types are also highly regarded for the clear tones they produce when formed into bells.
Warning
While aluminum bronze in its basic form is a relatively inert metal, alloys containing lead may lead to lead poisoning, especially if used near children young enough to put objects in their mouths without discretion. While this condition is rare, if any lead dust remains on the product, it can lead to symptoms such as hearing loss, anemia, impaired growth and learning disabilities, notes the Mayo Clinic. Adults may have exposure to lead dust if working with the alloy without proper protective gear.
