What Is Fossil-Rich Limestone?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock that contains at least 55 percent calcium carbonate. It is formed from organic remains, and hard parts of shells and mollusks are contained in its layers as fossils.
  1. Packed Biosparite

    • Packed biosparite is the technical name for fossil-rich limestone. Bio is for biological and sparite calcite holds everything together. Exposed areas have many fossils on the surface due to weathering.

    Micrite

    • Micrite is lime mud formed in water and cemented by time and pressure to form the most common of carbonate rocks.

    Fossils

    • Fossils can be the actual animal remains, such as a clam, or an impression, such as a leaf, preserved in the rock. Fossils commonly found in limestone are shark̵7;s teeth, clams, fish and other aquatic life forms, but anything in the water could sink to the bottom and become fossilized.

    Collectors

    • Because limestone has high numbers of fossils, it's popular among fossil collectors. They cut and polish the rocks, making attractive displays from their finds.

    Construction

    • Limestone is easy to carve and cut, and is widely used as a building material. Egyptians used it in the pyramids and Europeans used it to build cathedrals. Fossil limestone is desirable for tabletops, counters and other decorative objects because it is easily cut and polished. Slabs with large or unusual fossils are the most valued.
