How to Separate Gold From Quartz

Gold is normally not discovered by itself; it is usually either attached to or buried inside a large quartz stone. The gold must be separated from the quartz in order for its true value to be realized, as no buyer will agree to pay for gold pieces that are still latched on to clunky quartz rocks.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety goggles
  • Dolly pot (mortal and pestle)
  • Sieve
  • Gold pan
  • Gold specimens
  • Crack hammer
  • Tub
  • Container with a lid

Instructions

    • 1

Smash up a large rock into small, easy-to-work-with pieces using the crack hammer, once you have detected gold inside. Put on your safety goggles before starting, as bits of sharp debris could fly up and strike your eyes.

    • 2

Put a few pieces into the dolly pot and use the pestle to grind the quartz into a grain-like powder, which will separate the gold from the quartz. Make sure to crush up the rocks enough so that they can be run through a sieve.

    • 3

Run all ground-up powder through the sieve into a gold pan. Pick out any large pieces of gold that get stuck in the sieve. Crush up any material that did not pass through the sieve using the dolly pot, and run it through the sieve again.

    • 4

Pan all the powder that fit through the sieve into the tub so that the gold fully separates from the quartz, and will collect around the ridge of the pan.

    • 5

Pull the gold flakes and nuggets out of the pan, and place them in a container with a lid. These gold flakes or nuggets collect around the ridge of the pan because they are heavier than the quartz powder, and will be easily distinguishable by their sparkling color. Flakes and nuggets will be big enough to pull out using your fingers.
