Definition
Diatomaceous earth is actually the remnants of fossilized one-celled plants called diatoms. Diatoms lived in oceans and lakes that covered many parts of the planet. Today it is mined and processed for many uses.
Silica
Diatomaceous earth is 84 percent silicon dioxide (silica). Silica is a vital mineral and plays an important role in human body functions. It's directly related to overall mineral absorption.
Human Benefits
In addition to its benefit as a mineral, DE has been touted to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, improve bone and joint strength, and work with other antioxidants to reduce the effects of aging. The anecdotal list of benefits is lengthy.
Agricultural Benefits
Adding DE to animal feed prevents clumping and aids animal digestion. There is evidence that the Chinese have been doing this for 5,000 years. DE also contains several trace minerals important to livestock health.
Pest Control
Food-grade DE is a natural, environmentally friendly insecticide. It is EPA-approved for both indoor and outdoor crawling insects. Taken internally, it is an effective de-worming agent. Applied to fur, it rids cats and dogs of fleas and ticks.
Grades
There are different grades of diatomaceous earth. Be certain to use only food-grade DE for internal use and as an insecticide. Pool filter grade DE has been chemically treated and should never be ingested.
