To grow a crystal, you dissolve a chemical in water. When the water evaporates, the chemicals crystallize.

Making or growing crystals is educational, fun and easy. You can buy a kit or use what you have at home. For this tutorial, we will use sugar crystals; however, the process is the same no matter what type of crystals you are making.

Instructions

  1. Sugar Crystals (aka Rock Candy)

    • 1

Thoroughly wash and dry the fish tank. Gather all items within arms reach for easy working.

    • 2

      Boil water.

    • 3

Stir sugar into the boiling water.

    • 4

Add food coloring, if you wish.

    • 5

Pour the sugar water into the fish tank. Unless you wish to grow crystals in the tank, avoid getting any un-dissolved sugar in it.

    • 6

If you wish to make an eatable, kabob type crystals, suspend a wooden dowel across the tank top so it does not touch the bottom of the tank but is completely covered with the sugar water. If you do not plan to eat this, any rough string can be used instead f the wooden dowel.

Allow this to sit undisturbed until the crystals are done growing or you like the size.
