Things You'll Need
Instructions
Appraise the stones. Take your alexandrite to a reputable dealer in gemstones to have them appraised and certified genuine. As the known alexandrite deposits are being mined out, synthetic alexandrite stones are prevalent on the market. Make sure that your stones are genuine before you try to sell them.
Determine the value. Your appraiser can tell you just how much alexandrites of the same quality as your stones are selling for. He may also know who might be in the market for these rare gems.
Photograph the gems you intend to sell. Put the pictures together with an itemized list of the stones̵7; size, carat weight, color differential and whatever inclusions are in the stone. This gives you a complete record of what you are selling, as well as documenting your collection if a shipment to a buyer gets lost.
Insure the gems. If you choose to use an online auction house or a buyer who is not close enough for you to visit personally, you will have to ship the stones. Make sure that you get the full value of the stones if your shipment gets lost.
Visit your local jewelers. Mined alexandrite stones are rare on the market; many jewelers clamor for this unique chrysoberyl. If you have Russian stones, the deposits were virtually mined out by the beginning of the 20th century. Russian alexandrites are worth more than stones mined in Brazil and India, although all alexandrite gems are valuable due to their rarity.
