How to Dissolve Citric Acid

Citric acid is a substance that is commonly thought of as being in citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges, but it is actually found in almost all living organisms, whether they be plant or animal. In its pure state, citric acid is completely colorless and in small crystal form. It has many uses, ranging from a flavoring for sodas to an additive for metal cleaners. For at-home use, citric acid can be used to flavor drinks such as fruit punch and homemade sodas. Citric acid has a tart, sour flavor that goes well with any type of fruit drink. In order to use it as a flavoring for drinks, it must first be dissolved. Citric acid behaves much in the same way as sugar when it comes to dissolving in liquid.

Instructions

    • 1

Add 4 cups of water to a pot. Put the pot on the stove and set it to high heat.

    • 2

Put a lid on the pot and wait for the water to come to a full boil. If you do not use a lid, you could lose as much as ¼ cup of water due to the rising vapors.

    • 3

Remove the pot from the heat after it boils and add 2 tbs. of citric acid to the water. Stir the mixture with a spoon until it dissolves. Citric acid can dissolve in cool water, but it takes longer and leaves the risk of undissolved particles.
