How to Test for Synthetic Tanzanite

Tanzanite is a gemstone that is only found in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Many different shades of tanzanite include brown, iridescent blue, violet, gray and green. Tanzanite can be a good investment for a jewelry collector; the tanzanite should be tested for synthetic qualities to be ensure that your selected piece of jewelry will retain its value.

      Place the tanzanite on a white surface so you can discern the correct color of the tanzanite. Shine the pen light on the tanzanite while looking at it. Don't use fluorescent light because it will make the color look different.

      Move the tanzanite filter over the tanzanite. The tanzanite should appear a gray pinkish color through the filter. Place the tanzanite filter very close to the tanzanite now. Look at the color of the stone and remember what it looks like.

      Use a dichroscope to inspect the tanzanite. Look at the color of the body of the tanzanite. Move the stone around while moving the filter up and down. Remember the colors of the tanzanite so you can figure out if it is real or not.

      Examine the color chart to determine if it's synthetic or real tanzanite. Real tanzanite will be orange-pink through the color filter and purplish blue color with the Dichroscope. Synthetic will be a green color through the color filter and green blue pink purplish color with the Dichroscope.
