Characteristics
Ruby crystals are members of the mineral family of corundum, made up of aluminum oxide. The presence of chromium makes the crystal red. The blue variety of corundum is the sapphire. The ruby rates a 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Some rubies have inclusions of titanium oxide, which cause light to create a star effect. These are called "star rubies".
History
Mentioned in the Bible numerous times, ruby crystals have been hailed as precious stones throughout history. The ancient Egyptians considered the ruby a sacred stone of the sun goddess Sekhmet. Rubies were thought to darken in color when danger was near.
Healing Properties
The ruby crystal is blood red for a reason. It symbolizes the life blood and has been used to help with circulation, warming up of the extremities and increasing the libido. Ruby is, after all, a stone of passion.
Metaphysical Properties
Rubies balance the chakra system and the body's energy field when placed on the heart chakra. To ward off nightmares, place a ruby under your pillow. For children's nightmares, put it under the mattress to prevent loss or swallowing. Rubies are also home protectors and increase business opportunities, especially for those who are self-employed.
