Description

• Black tourmaline is the black variety of a group of crystals made up of sodium iron aluminum borosilicate hydroxide oxide. The presence of iron yields the crystal's black color.

History

• The word tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word, "turmeli," which means "mixed." A fitting name, as tourmalines come in such a variety of colors. Schorl, or black tourmaline, comes from an old German mining term. Black tourmaline was used as far back as the ancient Romans, who used the stone to promote restful sleep.

Healing Properties

• In chakra healing layouts, black tourmaline is placed between the feet to ground the person as it balances the chakras. It is also used to alleviate arthritis, heart disease and sore throat.
