Characteristics
Red Aswan granite is a vividly red granite marked with black granules, although other colors such as white and brown are also often present. Aswan granite is marketed based on both its durability and its resistance to water. It is one of the densest types of granites used.
Location
Aswan granite is mined solely at a particular location in Egypt, and while other types of granite may come close to mimicking the color of Aswan granite, the true stone is found only in one place. This can create confusion, since Egypt has many types of granite, which may or may not be passed off as Aswan granite regardless of location.
Name
Aswan refers to the quarries in which the granite was mined. These mines have been used for centuries and are famous for producing the rich red and black color that Aswan is known for in the rest of the world. The granite may also be referred to as "Rosso Aswan."
History
The ancient Egyptians first discovered Aswan granite and used it for a number of applications, especially monuments and linings for chambers or temples. It has also been found used as a frame for doorways and a base material for carvings.
Uses
Today Red Aswan granite is used for luxury kitchen countertops, where its nonabsorbent and durable qualities are put to good use. For larger projects such as walkways, floors and entry rooms, Aswan granite tends to last longer than many other types of granite and is often put to use in high-traffic areas.
