Identification
Garnets typically have a rounded shape, which is how they got their name, derived from the word grain. They come in all colors except blue.
Types
Different types of garnet are categorized by color. Pyrope, the deep purple and red garnets, are the most common, and other types include spessertite (orange/red brown) and tsavorite (green).
Geography
Major garnet-producing countries include China, India and Australia. In the United States, the gemstone is mined in Idaho, New York and Montana.
Uses
Many garnets are cut and polished for use in jewelry. Those that are too flawed for this are used in abrasive cleaners, water filters and similar industrial devices.
Fun Fact
In folklore, garnets are said to have healing powers. They also offer strength and protection to those wearing them, and are believed to relieve skin inflammation and regulate blood flow.
