Physical Properties
Agates can vary from translucent to opaque and have a waxy luster. They occur in a variety of colors, including brown, white, black, yellow, green and gray. The banded appearance of an agate resembles the rings on a tree trunk. Agates rank a seven on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, with 10 being the highest degree of hardness.

Agates occur abundantly in volcanic rock. They are found throughout the United States and around the globe.
Types
There are many varieties of agates often named for their color and/or banded pattern. Blue-lace agate, moss agate and fire agate are a few of the many types.
Cost
Although the cost of agates might vary, they are fairly inexpensive gemstones. Agates with unusual patterns might be more costly.
Lore
The ancient Egyptians used agates as protective talismans. Hindu mystics believed an agate would help children overcome fears. The Romans wore agates to appease the gods and to ensure an abundant harvest.
