Where Is Gold Located in Canada?

History

• Canada is most famous for its Yukon Territory and the part it played in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896. Gold was first discovered in Canada in 1823 along the Riviere Chaudiere in eastern Quebec, then in the 1850s, most notably in 1858 when the Fraser River Gold Rush, or Cariboo Gold Rush as it was also known, began.

Geography

• The Canadian Shield covers half of the land area of the country. It is the oldest and largest geological region in Canada having formed 570 million years to 4 billion years ago. Most of Canada's gold mines are located on the Shield, especially in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.

Size

• The Canadian Shield encompasses 2.98 billion square miles in area.

Types

• There are different types of gold mines, including underground, open pit, concentrator and mill.

Operational Mines

• There are several mines in operation. They include Eskay Creek Mine and Myra Falls Operation in British Columbia; Thompson Mill and Rice Lake Gold Mine in Manitoba; Brunswick Mining Division in New Brunswick; Garson Mine and Stobie Mine in Ontario; and Mouska Mine and Sleeping Giant in Quebec.
