Uses for Muscovite Mica

Muscovite mica is a common mineral found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. It can be found in granite, granite pegmatites and mica schists. It has one perfect basal cleavage, is transparent in thin sheets and has a vitreous luster. Muscovite is white and can be peeled into paper-thin sheets.

Insulation
- Muscovite mica is used in electrical insulation. Muscovite has a high electrical resistivity and capacitance.
Paint
- Muscovite mica is often used as a reflector in paint. It gives the paint a glossy tone. Muscovite also increases the weather-withstanding ability of the paint and thickens it to reduce running. Muscovite also has a high heat resistance, so the paint itself helps insulate the home.
Wallpaper
- Muscovite is used in wallpaper as a reflector. Its pearly luster gives the wallpaper a silky and shiny look.
Lubricants
- Muscovite is greasy in nature. It is often used in industrial lubricants to keep machine parts running smoothly.
Plaster boards and Wall boards
- Muscovite has a high heat resistance and serves as a fire retardant in plaster boards and wall boards. Muscovite also reflects sound well, providing good acoustics.
Dry Powder Extinguishers
- Muscovite, due to the high heat resistance, is also often used in dry powder fire extinguishers.
