Use a tackle box or sturdy backpack to carry the tools and supplies.

Begin with the basic tools - masonry hammer, small rock hammer, cold chisels, sieve, shovel, trowel, and a large and small magnifying glass.

Add the extras - plastic freezer bags, notebook, pen, labels, masking tape, paint brushes, squeeze water bottle, paper towels, safety goggles, dental tools, and a three-prong garden trowel.

Include a good rock and mineral identification book such as the Simon and Schuster's "Guide to Rocks and Minerals."

Choose one or two special items to include in your kit if it is a gift such as an insulated water bottle, jewelry findings to make jewelry, or a cap to prevent sunburn.
