Materials
To determine the volume of an object, especially for an irregular shape, you need a few basic materials. First you will need the item to be measured and water. You will also need a beaker marked with volume measurements that is large enough to accommodate the item while leaving space for water. You may also want to keep a piece of paper and pencil handy to note your observations.
Setting Up the Process
Before you measure the item, you need to ensure that it will fit into the beaker with water to a point where it won't overflow. Once this has been verified, you can set up your experiment. Pour water into the beaker to a specific volume mark on the side of the beaker. Record the volume level so you can compare it later to determine the volume of your object.
Adding the Object
Once you record the volume of the water, it is time to add the object to the beaker. Gently drop it into the beaker so you don't splash any water out. Make sure the object is entirely under the water. If it isn't, remove the object and add more water then note the change to the original water volume. When the object is completely submerged in the water, record the new volume from the side of the beaker.
Figuring it Out
After you record the two different volumes, you can easily determine the volume of the object. Simply subtract the original water volume from the volume with the object submerged. This difference gives you the volume of the object. You can use this information to determine other physical aspects of the object, such as its buoyancy and density.
