Prepare the titanium composite. A carbide drill, which is designed to make holes in very hard materials, such as titanium composite, will be required for this step. Drill the appropriate-sized hole for your fastener. For best results when drilling a hole in titanium composite, make sure temperatures are kept at temperatures at least 50 degrees cooler than what would normally be used. Temperatures can be easily decreased during drilling by pouring small amounts of cool water into the area being worked upon. This added water increases viscosity, flushes the hole and decreases friction. Air polymers, which function in a manner similar to that of water, can also be effective at lowering drilling temperatures.
Attach the riveter used in the process to an air source. This air source should provide at least 120 pounds per square inch for best results. Fasten the colid assembly, which holds the head piston in place, to the riveter, threading carefully to avoid possible damage. Secure the two pieces of equipment with a wrench.
Attach the sleeve assembly to the riveter housing. Again, this process should be done slowly and carefully to avoid stripping either of the two pieces of equipment. Tighten the jam nut as much as possible to ensure a secure seal.
Insert the titanium composite being used into the workpiece, with the hole drilled in Step 1 facing up. Make sure that the titanium has been secured before proceeding. Place the stem of the rivetless nut plate used in this project into the hole of the piece of titanium composite. Insert the stem of the nut plate into the sleeve housing previously assembled. For best results in this project, the riveter should be perpendicular to the workpiece holding the titanium composite. Pull the trigger to complete rivetless nut plate installation.
