How to Tell If You Have a Helium Leak

Many people rent or purchase helium tanks for filling balloons during celebrations. A helium tank keeps this noble gas pressurized within its thick walls until the helium is accessed through the attached valve. However, helium tanks can develop tiny leaks over time, such as from age or external damage. A leak may be so small that the owner may not notice until the tank completely empties itself. A helium leak test is a common method of determining leak locations.

Things You'll Need

  • Leak detector
  • Helium tank
  • Liquid soap

Instructions

  1. Leak Detector Method

    • 1

Attach a flexible hose to the helium tank's valve. Keep the valve closed.

    • 2

Connect the opposite flexible hose end to a leak detector device. Make sure that both ends of the flexible hose are firmly attached to the tank and device.

    • 3

Partially open the helium tank's valve, allowing a small amount of helium to leak through. Turn on the leak detector.

    • 4

Observe the leak detector's front display. The device will sound an alarm if a leak is detected. The helium tank's internal pressure will oscillate if there is a leak. This pressure oscillation informs the leak detector that the tank has a crack or hole along its assembly.

    Soapy Bubble Method

    • 5

Mix liquid soap with water. Make sure to be gentle during mixing; no bubbles should be produced at this point.

    • 6

Coat the helium tank's exterior with the soapy mixture with a rag.

    • 7

Observe the tank's exterior surface. Any bubble formation indicates a leak.
