How to Test a Water Processing Space Simulator

Water treatment simulators are software programs that are used to review water treatment processes. They are used to identify what is needed in order for water treatment to be successful. The simulator programs are being used instead of water treatment models since the simulators can quantify data and allow the user to change properties. Water-processing simulators are used by NASA for space explorations. Water is limited in space explorations and it is necessary to treat water for use during space exploration.

Instructions

  1. Test a Water Processing Simulator

    • 1

Install the simulator program onto your computer. Look for programs available for download on the Internet or through a CD. If using a CD, the CD will require the file SETUP.EXE
to be installed and run properly.

Look at the options on the program. There will probably be a blank drawing board with a variety of processes. Select the process in which you want to test. Place this process on the drawing board. Placing the processes on the drawing boards creates a flowsheet to illustrate how the water treatment simulator works. Certain processes will lead to static properties, such as temperature or pH. Select as necessary. Select operational properties as needed, such as grain size, calcium carbonate or density.

    • 3

Run the simulation. Press the "Play" button on the menu bar. The results will appear when the simulation is complete. The results can be displayed in a graph mode, statistically, in a table or in a checklist. The graph view can be manipulated for the user's needs, such as X and Y axes scales, color and type of data. The table view can be altered to illustrate specific columns. In addition, statistics can be changed to calculate specific statistics, such as average or standard deviation.

Change the processes, static properties and operational properties as needed. Run the simulation and compare the differences in water-processing simulator properties.
