Good Ideas for Animal & Plant Cell Projects

Scientific projects about animal and plant cells can help students learn about biology effectively. Materials for such projects can be readily accessed, but configuring those materials requires careful coordination and creativity. Prerequisites for these projects include patience and the basic knowledge about animal and plant cell components.
  1. Edible Cell Model

    • Prepare light-colored gelatin with less water than required to produce a stiff base material. Let the gelatin set by refrigerating it for an hour. Prepare various kinds of candy materials to represent the different cell organelles found in typical animal cells. Some elements you can use include gumdrops, candy-coated chocolate candies, chewy candies, raisins, plums, candy sprinkles and candy ribbons. Allow the various organelle elements to set.

    Dough Cell Replica

    • Mix together equal parts baking soda, corn starch and flour with water and cream of tartar. Simmer on a stovetop and allow the mixture to cool with a wet cloth atop. Add coloring elements by adding tempera paint or food coloring while cooking. On a piece of plastic wrap, flatten a pancake-sized piece of dough, which will represent the cytoplasm of a plant cell. Position onto the first flat piece different color dough shaped into the different animal or plant cell components.

    Clay Cell Model

    • Take different colors of clay. On a broad, flat work surface, lay out a plastic wrap and flatten a large ball of clay into the size of a pancake. This will serve as your cytoplasm. Take small pieces of different colors of clay, form them into the parts of your biological cell and arrange them onto your base.

    Styrofoam Cell Drawing

    • Draw the outline of a cell on a large piece of extruded polystyrene foam. Draw the outlines of the cell organelles in the cell. Color in the outlines of the organelles with magic markers of various hues. You can label the parts from the outside of the cell outline. Cover the extruded polystyrene foam with plastic to protect your drawing.
