How to Use a Magnet Flux for Heating

If you have any sort of induction heating system you are already using magnetic flux to produce heat. Magnetic flux occurs when there is a change in the magnetic field surrounding an object. If there is a coil of wire around the magnet or electromagnet, the flux of the movement of the magnet will induce a current through the wires. If there is already an electric current flowing through the wire, the flux in the magnetic field creates resistance to that current, which results in the release of energy in the form of heat.

Things You'll Need

  • Thick insulated metal wire
  • Adjustable AC adapter
  • Crocodile clips
  • Magnetic metal piece

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the heavy wire so that it forms a coil. Leave room enough in the center that you can place the piece of magnetic metal inside, so it is surrounded by the coil.

    • 2

Use the crocodile clips to attach the adapter to each end of the coil of wire. Set the coil on its side on a heat-resistant surface, so it looks like a spring.

    • 3

Place the magnetic metal inside the center of the coil spring, but do not let it touch the coil at any point.

    • 4

Turn the AC adapter on. Adjust it slowly upwards. The higher you turn the control, the hotter the piece of metal in the center of the coil will get, even though it is not touching the coil at all.
