Things You'll Need
Instructions
Connect the batteries in series so they give you 24 volts. Do this by connecting the negative terminal of the first battery to the positive terminal of the second battery with a jumper cable. Make sure you have a solid connection to the terminals.
Connect the positive terminal of the first battery to the metal item to be welded. You now have the power to weld. Connect the negative terminal of the second battery to locking pliers. Put your welding rod into the jaws of the locking pliers.
Clean the part that needs welding. The best welds are made with clean surfaces. Remove any oil or other surface debris. If the area to be welded has rust, remove it with a wire brush.
Protect your eyes by putting on a dark welding mask. Protect your arms with long-sleeved clothing made from natural fibers.
Apply the welding rod to the metal parts to be welded together. Create an initial weld pool. This usually takes one or two seconds. Once a metal pool is created, start extending the weld pool across the full area to be welded. Don't go too fast. A general guideline is to use an inch of welding rod for each inch of weld. For a good weld, keep a consistent distance from the welding rod to the metal.
