Instructions

    • 1

Remove any burrs from the sides of the feather with the blade of a utility knife. Lightly sand the length of the feather with fine-grit sandpaper for a few minutes. Wipe the feather off with a soft cloth.

    • 2

Place a plastic container on a work surface. Fill the container almost to the top with sand. Heat the sand with the pressurized air from a heat gun̵7;s nozzle for five minutes. Insert the tip of a meat thermometer into the sand. Remove the thermometer and heat the sand with the heat gun for an additional five minutes if the temperature does not reach 350 degrees.

    • 3

Remove the thermometer and heat the sand with the heat gun for an additional five minutes if the temperature does not reach 350 degrees. Insert the tip of the feather into the sand. Leave the feather alone for six hours.

    • 4

Remove the end of the feather from the sand. Wipe the end of the feather with a soft cloth to remove any loose sand still clinging to it. Place the feather horizontally on the work surface with the pointed end facing to the right.

    • 5

Make a diagonal cut across the end of the feather with the utility knife. Smooth the cut end with the fine-grit sandpaper.

    • 6

Measure from the cut end to the other end of the feather and make a dot at the halfway point with a pencil. Draw a 1-inch line from each side of the dot. Cut a slit in the line with the utility knife.

    • 7

Rotate the feature so that the slit is facing down. Draw a 2-inch line in from the cut end. Make a slit with the knife along the line, starting 1 inch in on the line. Enlarge the slit by running the knife back and forth inside the edges until a channel is made.

    • 8

Place the plastic hose horizontally on the work surface. Measure 3 inches in from the left end of the hose. Cut through the hose at the 3-inch mark with the utility knife. Apply silicone sealant paste to one of the holes of the tube. Let the paste set for two hours.

    • 9

Dip the point of the feather that is now a homemade fountain pen into an ink bottle for three seconds. Hold your fountain pen with the slit facing up. Write on a piece of paper using the pointed end. Place the hose over the pointed end to keep the ink from evaporating when you are done writing. Put the cap back on the ink bottle.
