How to Use Welding Bottles for Methane

Welding gases can include acetylene, argon and oxygen. They are shipped and stored in high-pressure gas cylinders up to 2,000 pounds per square-inch. Acetylene and oxygen are highly flammable and should be handled with extreme caution. If a gas welding cylinder is empty, it could be cleaned and reused for another gas, such as natural gas (methane).

Things You'll Need

  • Welding gas cylinder (empty)
  • Nitrogen gas cylinder
  • High-pressure tubing and fittings

Instructions

    • 1

Open the welding gas cylinder by opening the main cylinder valve on the top of the bottle. Ensure there is adequate ventilation.

    • 2

Connect the nitrogen gas cylinder to the used welding bottle using the high-pressure tubing and appropriate fittings per the configuration of the bottle nozzles.

    • 3

Open the nitrogen cylinder and the welding bottle valves to allow nitrogen to flow into the welding bottle. Allow the two cylinders to equalize in pressure. This should take approximately 30 seconds. Close both cylinder valves and disconnect the nitrogen bottle.

    • 4

Open the welding gas cylinder valve and allow the nitrogen to completely empty. The bottle is now inserted and cleaned of any residual welding gas. Connect the bottle to a natural gas source and fill the bottle with methane.
