How to Make a Homemade Static Eliminator Wand

Static electricity is a buildup of electrical charge on an object's surface; this often occurs on fabrics, such as after removing clothes from a dryer ("static cling") -- once the fabrics are removed from the dryer, they stick together. A simple yet effective method for removing static from items such as clothes, bed-sheets or rugs is to make a static-eliminating wand, which can be constructed with common household items.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal coat hanger
  • Pliers
  • Electrical tape

Instructions

    • 1

Unwrap the top hook of a metal coat hanger. Unbend the ends of the wire so that they are straight using pliers.

    • 2

Fold the coat hanger in half evenly. Hold the ends together tightly. Pinch the coat hanger together, using pliers, starting at the top, bent end and working down to the two ends that you're holding together; this will result in a wand-like shape.

    • 3

Wrap the loose ends together using electrical tape. Ensure that you wrap over the bottom of the loose ends so that you cover the metal entirely; this will help protect from scratching other objects or snagging on fabric.

    • 4

Rub the wand against the surface area of the fabric that has the static thoroughly. The metal will ground out the static and remove it from the fabric.
