How to Make a Carton for an Egg Drop So the Egg Won't Break

Egg drop contests tests students or scientists on their physics and engineering knowledge. In an egg drop contest, participants must drop a raw egg from various heights, and the design that protects the egg in the longest fall is successful. These competitions have real world applications in construction and science. For example, scientists who developed spacecraft had to cushion the fall of unmanned craft, because no pilot on board could ensure a smooth landing. You can experiment with many materials for these contests.

Things You'll Need

Pantyhose
Scissors
Large box
Stapler

Instructions

  Cut off one leg from the pantyhose and place the egg inside.

  Place the egg near the knee of the leg, and tie a knot tightly on either side of the egg to hold it in place.

  Position the leg inside of the box and hold the egg in the center. Stretch one end of the leg to a corner in the box, and staple it securely in place. This will allow the egg to stay near the center of the box.

  Stretch the leg to the opposite corner, and staple the other end there tightly. The egg should be at the center of the box, and its fall will be absorbed by the springy nylon material.
