Though there are many different potential causes of bad breath, also known as halitosis, such as strong foods and conditions like tonsillitis, the most common cause of bad breath by far is the bacteria that lives on your tongue. There are roughly 700 different bacteria that live on the tongue, and about six that are nearly ubiquitous in people who suffer from bad breath. To get rid of bad breath, then, you must get rid of the bacteria.

      Stand in front of a mirror with your mouth open. It will help to have ample lighting.

      Scrape the back of your tongue with a tongue scraper, which is also sometimes called a tongue debrider, because the back of the tongue is where the smell-causing bacteria live. It is a good idea to make this part of your teeth-brushing routine.

      Rinse with anti-microbial mouthwash if the scraping does not get rid of the bad breath.

      Keep your mouth clean by brushing and flossing twice a day.

      Try eliminating other bad breath culprits, such as smoking and strong foods like garlic or curry, if sanitizing your mouth does not eliminate bad breath. If nothing else works, see a doctor, as there may be some underlying medical condition causing the bad breath.
