Difference Between Music & Noise Science Project

Music and noise science projects can show the effects the two elements have on people and plants. Different responses are tested while or after varying degrees of music or noise are allowed in the background. Some experiments have shown that music can have positive effects on people and plants, while noise can do the opposite.
  1. Human Visual Memory

    • A person̵7;s visual memory alters, organizes, receives, recovers and stores information. Many factors can affect the memory, one of which is music. To see how music can affect memory, find about 15 people and divide them into three groups. Ask the first group to study a picture for half a minute with classical background music, and then ask another group to study the same picture with heavy metal background music. The third group will analyze the picture without any background music. After 30 seconds, give the subjects a questionnaire related to the picture they just saw. Ask specific questions about what was in the picture, such as the color of the shirt of a person, how many people where in the picture or how many types of animals were shown. Tally and compare the results of the groups.

    Plant Growth

    • Seed germination can also be affected by music and noise. For this experiment, prepare four petri dishes, each containing 20 zucchini seeds. Place the four dishes in separate dark, humid, temperature-controlled chambers, shielded from outside sounds. Play heavy metal music in the first chamber, white noise in the second and classical music in the third. The fourth one will have no background music, as it will serve as the experiment̵7;s control. Allow the seeds to germinate for 72 hours, checking each dish every 12 hours to record any changes. Compare results once the experiment is finished.

    Verbal Working Memory

    • Divide subjects into four groups and give an identical list of words and phrases to each member of each group. Members of the first group will memorize the words and the phrases without any background music, while the second group will hear white noise. The third group will have heavy metal music in the background, while the last one will have classical music. After a few minutes, take the lists from the participants and ask them to write down everything they remembered from the list. Compare the answers from each group and see which one fared the best.

    Physiological Processes

    • According to thesportjournal.org, ̶0;Scientific inquiry has revealed five key ways in which music can influence preparation and competitive performances: dissociation, arousal regulation, synchronization, acquisition of motor skills and attainment of flow.̶1; To test these effects, select 10 subjects who have almost the same physical attributes. On the first day, let the subjects exercise without any background sound. On the second day, play heavy metal music in the background while they exercise. On the third day, play white noise as background and on the last day play classical music. Then compare their performance each day in those five key areas to see if the different background sounds affected their workouts.
