How to Make Edible Glass With Sugar for a Science Project

Glass is made with silicon, which comes from sand. Glass is dangerous when broken, so the film and television industry use fake glass in their stunt scenes. The fake glass is made with sugar and is alternatively called sugar glass, edible glass or breakaway glass. It is used in stunts where people fall through windows or hit each other with bottles. Sugar glass is also useful as windows in candy houses or for models and demonstrations at science fairs. To make edible glass for a science project, combine sugar, water and corn syrup, then cook the mixture until it is melted and clear.

Instructions

    • 1

Grease the baking sheet with vegetable oil. Make sure that the oil covers the sheet completely and is evenly spread. Afterwards, put the sheet inside of the refrigerator.

    • 2

Place the pot on the stove and add 1/2 cup of water. Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat. Add 1 cup of sugar and 5 tablespoons of light corn syrup. Mix the ingredients, then cover the pot with a lid. Wait until the sugar melts and begins to boil.

    • 3

Remove the lid and place the burner on high heat. Let the sugar mixture boil at 300 degrees for six to eight minutes. Check the liquid̵7;s temperature with a candy thermometer to make sure that it does not overcook. Remove the pot from the burner.

Remove the lid and place the burner on high heat. Let the sugar mixture boil at 300 degrees for six to eight minutes. Check the temperature with a candy thermometer or time it. Remove the pot from the burner.

    • 5

Take the baking sheet from the refrigerator. Poor the mixture onto the sheet and smooth it out with a knife or spatula. Put the sheet back into the refrigerator and let it cool for 30 to 60 minutes.

    • 6

Pry the sugar from the baking sheet using a knife when the sugar is solid enough. The edible glass will begin melting in 10 to 15 minutes, so keep it refrigerated when it is not in use.
