How to Make a Twister With Soda Bottles

A twister, or tornado, can be quite destructive, but, as a spinning column of air that involves some water particles, a twister is also a wondrous thing to behold. The twister is one of nature's more destructive forces, but a much smaller version of the devastating storm can be contained within two 2-liter soda bottles. Making a twister simulator is an excellent way to see this natural phenomenon safely and up close.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 2-liter soda bottles
  • 1/2 gallon of water
  • Duct tape
  • Washer with a 3/8-inch hole
  • A few drops of food coloring or bits of paper

Instructions

    • 1

Fill one of your bottles with a half-gallon of water.

    • 2

Add your food coloring or paper bits to the water.

    • 3

Place the washer on the top of the bottle with the water and food coloring in it.

    • 4

Set your other bottle on top of this washer. Line up the openings of your bottles so they are even, and line up the washer so its opening is in the middle of the bottles' openings.

    • 5

Wind one strip of duct tape around your washer. Press down the top and bottom of the duct tape strip so it sticks to your bottles' tops.

    • 6

Wrap more duct tape around your bottles' tops so the two bottles are firmly attached.

    • 7

Give your bottles a strong twist and then turn them upside down (so the filled bottle is on the top). Watch as the water makes a twister while it drains into the lower bottle.
