How to Install Instrumentation Tubing

Instrumentation tubing is available in a large number of different diameters and is made of different materials capable of safely transporting a wide variety of substances. After being properly cut and cleaned, instrumentation tubing connects with appropriately sized tube fittings or valves on the instrumentation. While the actual installation of the tubing is straightforward, some planning is required to ensure the appropriate type of tubing is used. Fortunately, the instruments the tubing connects to come with documentation detailing what type of tubing is required.

      Select the correct tubing material for the installation. Take into consideration the temperature and pressure of the material being transported. Additionally, select tubing that has the same diameter as the instrumentation to which it will be attached. Consult the documentation provided with the instrumentation for the exact specifications required for the tubing.

      Use the tube cutter to cut the tubing cleanly. Never use a saw or any other cutting device as the cut will have a jagged edge. After cutting the tubing, use the deburring tool to remove any remaining burrs.

      Flush the inside of the tubing with compressed air or cleaning solvent to ensure no debris remains inside the tubing. Any debris that remains in the tubing can damage the instrumentation the tubing will be connected to.

      Connect the cut and cleaned tubing into the appropriate opening on the instrumentation. The tubing should connect to the instrumentation securely. Do not force the tubing onto the instrumentation or use tape to secure the tubing to the instrumentation. The correct tubing should seal to the instrumentation by the pressure produced by a proper fit.
