How to Convert Baking Soda to Washing Soda

Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is the chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. This compound is commonly used in cooking and cleaning, as well as an efficient medicine to relieve heartburn and acid indigestion. However, sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), or washing soda, serves as a better cleaning agent because it is chemically more basic. Since baking soda is available in any grocery store for a low price, you may consider converting it to washing soda. The chemical reaction behind this transformation requires heating and follows the equation: 2NaHCO3 = Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O.
