How to Convert Grams to Volumes

The density of a substance relates the mass of that substance to the volume that this mass will occupy. All pure substances have a characteristic density that is a function of the types of atoms making up that substance and the way those atoms are arranged into molecules. We can also determine the typical densities for more heterogeneous substances, such as wood or different types of soil. These densities will generally vary over a range of values, but are still useful in making mass or volume calculations.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the density formula. The formula is generally written as density equals mass over volume.

    • 2

Find the density of the material whose mass, in grams, you want to convert into a volume. The density should be given in grams per cubic centimeter.

    • 3

Convert the density into grams per cubic centimeter if it is given in kilograms per cubic meter. Do so by multiplying the weight in kilograms by 1000, because there are 1000 grams in a kilogram, and then dividing this by one million, because there are one million cubic centimeters in a cubic meter.

    • 4

Divide the mass of the material you want to convert by its density to obtain the volume of the material. For example, if you have six grams of material, and its density is 1.5 grams per cubic centimeter, the volume is 4 cubic centimeters.
