How to Measure a Quilt's Perimeter

Geometry is the study of shapes and sizes and is first studied in early mathematics. Some of the simplest concepts of geometry include the calculation of areas within shapes as well as determining the total outer length of the shape (perimeter). The concept of perimeter is an important concept in various trades including construction, interior design and textiles. The perimeter of a quilt can be measured relatively easily using a tape measure and a calculator.

     Take the quilt and spread it out on an open surface, such as a bed. The quilt should be rectangular and hence have four sides.

     Use the tape measure to determine the length of each of the four sides of the quilt.

     Use the calculator to add up the four lengths of the quilt. The sum of the four lengths is the perimeter of the quilt.
