How to Make an Earth Model out of Foam

Whether you are making a model of the solar system or simply need a craft for a budding scientist, making an Earth model out of foam is easier than you think. With a few basic supplies and some attention to detail, you can create an Earth that will take much less time than the biblical seven days. This project is simple enough that you can sit back and supervise while your little one gets creative.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Secure a Styrofoam ball onto a 1/2- to 1-inch wooden dowel. Wrap the dowel at the base of the foam a few inches down with masking tape to protect it from paint.

    • 2

Stick the dowel with the foam ball attached into a cup of rice or beans to secure it so you can paint freely.

    • 3

Paint the entire foam ball blue as a base color. Allow it to dry thoroughly before moving on.

    • 4

Paint the land areas in green, using a globe as the model for where the green color should go. Use a feathery brush to apply white paint to simulate clouds if you wish. Allow the model to dry thoroughly.

    • 5

Remove the dowel from the model and touch up the hole with left over paint. If you wish to leave the dowel in, remove the masking tape.
