How to Measure the Diode Frequency Response

A diode is an electrical component that allows a current to pass through it in one direction. There are two forms of electrical current and these are known as direct current and alternating current signals. The response of a diode depends upon the type of electricity passed through it ̵2; and if it is an AC signal, the frequency of the current is important. The frequency response of a diode can be measured using some simple laboratory equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Function generator
  • Oscilloscope
  • Diode

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the positive terminal of the function generator output to the positive terminal of the diode. Connect the negative terminal of the function generator output to the negative terminal of the diode.

    • 2

Connect one of the oscilloscope inputs across (parallel to) the positive and negative terminals of the diode.

    • 3

Switch on the function generator, set it to output a square wave, and set an amplitude within the limits of the diode. Check the diode specification sheet to check the available voltage ranges. Set a desired frequency on the function generator.

    • 4

Switch on the oscilloscope. Change the volts/division and time/division settings until the waveform comes into view on the oscilloscope screen. The frequency response of the diode can now be measured by changing the frequency output on the function generator and viewing the waveform on the oscilloscope screen.
