Things You'll Need
Instructions
Assign a color to represent each chemical base. Have the small gumdrops or jellybeans represent the four bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine) and the alternating black and red licorice represent the sugar and phosphate molecules.
Connect alternating pairs of bases, or gumdrops, with toothpicks. Pair only the bases that are typically paired in DNA. Cut the licorice into small, even pieces.
Connect the pairs of gumdrop strands to the licorice, one piece on each end of the toothpick. Use fishing line through the licorice to connect sugar phosphate backbone. Continue connecting until you reach the desired length. Twist the model so that it resembles a spiral, or a double helix.
