How to Measure Yaw With an Accelerometer

Yaw rotation describes the circular movement around an axis. The speed of that movement around the axis is measured in degrees per second. You can imagine a football, missile or arrow spinning round and round on an axis to envision this movement. An accelerometer can be used to measure this movement as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Accelerometer
  • Servo sensors

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the three servo sensors to the object that you will rotate. Apply a method that will keep them attached no matter how fast the object spins. Screw, fasten or glue the servo to the object with a great amount of pressure.

    • 2

Place the accelerometer on a flat surface. The components must face up to zero out the reading.

    • 3

Power up the accelerometer board either by battery or electric current. As it is powering, the accelerometer must remain motionless in order to zero out the reading. The LED lights on the board will then turn off.

    • 4

Begin to slowly rotate your object in air. The LED light on the board should brighten and begin to produce a reading. Observe and record the reading of the degrees per second to complete the measurement
