How to Calibrate a USN-500 Scale

The USN-500 scale from US Balance is a compact precision digital scale. It is used for weighing chemicals and other materials in scientific laboratories and industrial applications as well as for weighing jewelry and precious stones. Therefore, it can display weights in grams or ounces as well as in pennyweight, a measure used in the jewelry trade, and in grains, a pharmaceutical unit of measure. Once you go through the simple process of calibrating your scale, it will provide accurate and reliable results.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 alkaline or lithium 1.5 volt size "AAA" batteries
  • 100-gram (3.53-oz.) scale calibration weight

Instructions

    • 1

Open the battery compartment at the bottom of the scale and insert two fresh AAA cells so that the battery terminals line up properly with their respective positive (+) and negative (-) compartment terminals as marked inside the compartment. Close the battery compartment.

    • 2

Press the "On/off" button on the left-hand side of the digital display. Wait a couple of seconds until you see "0" or "0.0" in the digital display.

    • 3

Place the scale on a flat, stable surface such as a countertop. Press and hold the "Cal/mode" button at the bottom right of the LCD display down for a second or two until "CAL" shows in the display.

    • 4

Press and release the "Cal/mode" button again and wait a second for "100" to appear in the LCD display. Place your 100-gram calibration weight on the scale immediately after you see "100" in the display.

    • 5

Wait a few seconds for the scale to reset itself and for "PASS" to show in the display. Check the batteries and make sure the surface you placed the scale on is completely flat and stable before you repeat Steps 3 and 4 in the event the display reads "FAIL."

    • 6

Set the switch on the bottom of the scale to either ounce, grams, dwt (pennyweight) or grains according to the unit of measure you want to use for weighing. You can now use the scale to weigh objects from 0.1 gram (0.035 ounce) to its capacity of 500 grams (17.64 ounce) by placing an object on the scale and waiting for its weight to appear in the display.
