Things You'll Need
Instructions
Attach one of the 1-by-1 boards to the square base with a two screws. Drill the screws up through the base into the smaller stick.
Drill through another 1-by-1 into the top of the 1-by-1 that has just been attached to the base. You should leave about 6 inches on one side, and 18 inches on the other. The new board should be parallel to the base, making the two 1-by-1 boards intersect at a right angle.
Place the bolt through the new hole and attach the nut. Do not tighten it so the wood cannot move. It should work more like a hinge.
Attach one of the 1-foot 1-by-1 boards at the end of the longer side of the previous 1-by-1 boards. Drill the same type of hole and attach the bolt the same as you did with the other board. This makes the new board parallel to the board attached to the base.
Attach the final 1-by-1 board parallel to the top board. All of these attachments should work like a hinge.
Connect the clip at the end of the last piece of 1-by-1. This is the final joint that you will work with to move via hydraulics. The syringe will open and close the clip. This creates your pincer device for the machine.
Add a bottle of water to the short side of the top board. This works as a counterbalance to keep the clip level before the hydraulics start. Secure the bottle with a string or hook. Adjust the amount of water in the bottle until the board is level with the table.
Attach two syringes together with the tubing. Each end of the tube should hook to the end of the syringe. Make sure there are no leaks. Make four pairs.
Fill one end of each pair with water. Use the plunger to press the water through the tubing until it reaches the other syringe. Refill the syringe so it is full but you can still insert the plunger. Now one syringe and the tubing is full of water. When pressed, it will fill the other syringe with water and move the plungers, thereby moving the wood.
Attach four syringes onto the base with U-clips. All of these syringes should start with the plungers fully extended and full of water.
Using a U-clip, connect one of the other four syringes at each of the joints. The plunger of the syringe should attach to the wood so that it runs perpendicular to it. This allows for the plunger to push on the wood when the fluid changes direction. The plunger can be secured with a piece of tape.
Press on the various plungers connected to the base to move the water. This will work the plunger at the other end and move the clip. Pull on the plungers at the bottom to move the clip back to the beginning position. By opening and closing the clip with the hydraulics, you can pick up objects. Then use the hydraulics to adjust the position and drop the objects in another location.
