How to Build a Paper Platform That Holds Weight

At first, it may seem ridiculous to build using paper, but building structures out of seemingly weak materials is a way to learn about structural strength and basic engineering principles, such as load distribution (the direction of weight through a structure to its base), which apply to all structures, big and small.

  • Paper (10 sheets)

Instructions

    • 1

Roll nine of the pieces of paper into tight tubes. These tubes will function like the columns you've seen in buildings; each one will bear a little weight, and together they can bear a surprising amount of weight.

    • 2

Stand the nine tubes on end on a hard, flat surface in a three-by-three grid. This grid will be the support for the platform.

    • 3

Place the 10th piece of paper on top of the nine tubes to complete the platform.
