Hold the anemometer in your hand at arm̵7;s length. Hold the instrument at the top without blocking the hole on the back where wind enters the instrument. The wind entering the instrument will cause the ball to move.
Take a reading of the wind speed by looking to the scale on the left side of the anemometer set with numbers that take wind speed readings up to 10 miles per hour. The wind speed will be indicated by the ball that comes to rest at the number of miles per hour that the wind is blowing.
Take a reading of the wind speed if it is greater than 10 miles per hour. Do this by placing your finger over the hole located on the top of the anemometer. This action will activate the alternative scale located on the right side of the instrument with numbers beginning from the bottom at 10. You will notice the ball drop to correspond with this right-hand scale.
Take numerous readings over a period of time. Calculate the average wind speed by averaging your total readings and also make a note of the maximum wind gust. This number will be expressed in a fraction when you make your weather report. For example, if your average wind speed is 4 miles per hour and the maximum gust is 11 miles per hour, express this reading as ̶0;4/11 mph.̶1;
