How to Make an EMF Wave

Electromagnetic field waves may sound complex, but they are as simple as they are common. What makes EMF waves truly unique is their ability to not only travel through the air, but through space as well. EMF waves require an electric charge, which is why they can be emitted from appliances such as televisions. If you are looking for a science project or a quick experiment to pass the time, you can create EMF waves yourself.

Instructions

  1. Balloon Experiment

    • 1

Inflate the balloon with your mouth.

    • 2

Vigorously run the balloon against your hair or clothes for at least ten seconds. This will build an electric charge in the balloon. The longer you rub, the stronger the charge.

    • 3

Let go of the balloon. It will adhere to your clothes or hair for a short time. If you rub the balloon on your head and lift it, your hair will stand up. You have now created an EMF wave.

    Comb Experiment

    • 4

Put the comb up to your head and pass it through your hair several times from front to back.

    • 5

Remove the comb and hold it in front of you.

    • 6

Shake the comb repeatedly. You will see it shine. This indicates that the comb is emitting EMF waves.
