How to Balance a Magnetic Globe

A globe of the Earth spinning in midair could seem to be magic or the application of otherworldly technology. But what's actually happening is that the principle of magnetism is being tested between the globe and the base it's hovering over. To balance the globe over the base properly, adjust the positioning so the two sets of magnets are repelling each other. No special skills or tools are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the power cord attached to the globe̵7;s base into an outlet. Press the power button on the side of the base to activate the electromagnetic hidden inside.

    • 2

Adjust the control knob on the side of the base to the midway point. If there is no control knob to adjust, ignore this step completely.

    • 3

Hold the globe between your hands with the the weighted end, which has a magnet inside, pointed down.

    • 4

Position the globe so its bottom center edge lines up with the similar spot on the base. Move the globe toward you then away from you to get a feel for the pull from the magnetic field being generated. Stop moving the globe when the pull is at its strongest.

    • 5

Remove both hands from the globe simultaneously. Watch as the glove maintains its position in the air over the base on its own. Flick the front of the glove counterclockwise with your finger to start it spinning.
