How to Dissolve Alloys

If you want to extract a particular metal from an alloy one, place the alloy in an acid that will dissolve the metals you don't want while leaving the metal you do want unaffected. This will allow you to derive pure, or nearly pure samples of desired metals. However, such procedures can be dangerous and need to be approached with caution.

Things You'll Need

  • Fume cupboard
  • Nonreactive plastic tub
  • Acids
  • Tongs
  • Breathing mask
  • Protective clothing
  • Safety glasses

Instructions

    • 1

Place the alloy in a tub of nonreactive plastic. Polypropylene is suitable for most acids, but consult information on the suitability of containers to particular acids (see Resources). Place the tub inside a fume cupboard that is joined to the ventilation system of the building.

    • 2

Select an acid that is suitable for dissolving the metals you want to dissolve (see Resources). Activate the fume cupboard. Put on all protective equipment, including skin, eye and breathing protection.

    • 3

Pour the acid carefully over the metal object. Close the fume cupboard. Watch the reaction take place. If the reaction ceases before the dissolving is complete, then add more acid.
