How to Make Miniature Lightning With Wool & a Balloon

Lightning occurs when static electricity builds up in the atmosphere and is discharged to the ground. Smaller quantities of static electricity can also build up in a balloon when you rub it with a material that easily transfers its electrons to the latex, such as wool. The balloon becomes negatively charged because it cannot quickly transfer these electrons to the air, which is an insulator. However, when you get the balloon near a metal surface, which is a conductor, the electrons jump to it, causing a spark similar to that which causes lightning.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Blow up the balloon and tie a knot in the end.

    • 2

Rub the balloon vigorously with the wool, concentrating on the side of the balloon you want to create the lightning.

    • 3

Turn off all the lights and draw the curtains to make the room as dark as possible.

    • 4

Move the balloon close to a metal object, such as an aluminum doorknob, an untreated copper pot or a silver spoon. The static electricity from the balloon will jump between the surfaces, creating a spark.
