Instructions for the Royal Mariner Barometer

A Royal Mariner barometer works by measuring air pressure. Every barometer has a metal capsule filled with air inside. As air pressure within the capsule increases or decreases, the walls of the capsule expand or contract, which in turn pushes or pulls attached levers and pulleys to move the primary display marker. Barometers are used primarily to indicate air pressure changes due to elevation and weather. The Royal Mariner barometer is a typical barometer with straightforward operating procedures.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the center knob counterclockwise or clockwise to move the primary, black hand to your current elevation.

    • 2

Place the barometer in a location where the center knob won't be knocked or accidentally moved.

    • 3

Check the barometer periodically, roughly every 15 to 30 minutes, by lightly tapping the glass to make sure the linkage mechanism isn't sticking and reading the secondary, red indicator hand.

    • 4

Observe the direction the red hand moves to determine the current trend in air pressure. It moves to the right of the black hand if air pressure is high and rising; it moves to the left if air pressure is low and declining.

    • 5

Adjust the center knob as your elevation changes to keep an accurate air pressure reading.
