What Are the Differences Between Fluke 77-4 & 77-4BN?

Many different industries use multimeters for repairing and troubleshooting electronic or electrical circuitry, from repairing a television to troubleshooting a complex government aircraft circuit. Manufacturers such as Fluke offer numerous repair devices, including the 77-4 and 77-4BN multimeter models. Although extremely similar, these two models have different intended applications.
  1. Multimeter Features

    • A basic multimeter measures three different electronic values that usually require three separate devices. A multimeter measures resistance, electrical current and voltage. A user switches a rotating dial on the multimeter's front panel to the needed measurement, such as voltage. Two leads extend from the multimeter, allowing the user to touch the leads to the specific component or circuit for determining a voltage value. Users can isolate a malfunctioning component or circuit for repair using the multimeter.

    Fluke 77-4 Multimeter

    • The Fluke 77-4 multimeter is designed for basic use by commercial technicians or for resident household troubleshooting needs. The 77-4 model has a large digital display for easy viewing in cramped or poorly lit areas, such as an attic or basement. The device measures both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) for voltage and amperage, as well as resistance. In addition, the multimeter boasts a 0.3 percent accuracy rate determined at the point of manufacture.

    Fluke 77-4BN Multimeter

    • In contrast, the 77-4BN is specifically manufactured for volume sales to government groups, such as the U.S. Navy or Marines. The 77-4BN is identical in functionality to the 77-4 but has tighter tolerances. Government applications are extremely critical, requiring precise accuracy during measurement protocols. As a result, the manufacturer sets aside model units that adhere to an accuracy that is better than the advertised 0.3 percent. Specialized government inspectors work with the manufacturer to verify each specification of the 77-4BN before the devices are released to a governmental group.

    Considerations

    • Typically, consumers cannot purchase the 77-4BN model. The 77-4BN model is commonly under a contractual agreement with the government, strictly stipulating that only the specified parties within the contract can have access to the devices. Commercially available 77-4 multimeters are usually sold in home improvement or electronics stores.
