How to Make Laser Pointer Beam Heads

Laser pointer head beams are cut-out attachments that go on the end of a laser pointer and display an image. This occurs because the laser beam is only allowed through the cut-out. The shape of the cut-out determines the image of it, much like shining a flashlight through a cut out piece of construction paper. Due to the small size of the laser beam from the pointer, the cut-out also must be small.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a design for the laser pointer. The design should be a very simple geometric shape, like a triangle or peace sign. Not something complex like a four-legged animal shape.

    • 2

Set up a lighted table magnifying glass above the work space. This makes the job much easier.

    • 3

Measure the diameter of the opening of the laser pointer's tip.

    • 4

Sketch the design to the size of the laser pointer's tip on a piece of paper with a pencil for practice. Do this until the design can be replicated perfectly every time.

    • 5

Cut a round piece of plastic, the size of the laser's tip, from a 2-mm-thick black plastic sheet.

    • 6

Carefully cut the design out of the plastic circle.

    • 7

Place the cutout in the center of the sticky side of a small strip of clear tape.

    • 8

Tape the cutout to the tip of the laser pointer. This is the custom beam head.

    • 9

Turn on the laser pointer and test the work.
